As the chair gaveled the committee into order, the Federation
International De Football association went into formal session. In the midst of
new faces as well as the experienced ones, the agenda of the day was selected
as “FIFA Reforms” which was proposed by the delegate of the Asian Football Confederation. Though the
delegates seemed hesitant in the beginning, the level of enthusiasm did rise as
the committee carried on.
Various suggestions as to how to make FIFA more transparent and accountable were presented in the
committee. Delegates of countries such as France, Germany, UEFA, Qatar,
Conmebol contributed wholeheartedly to keep the debates fiery. The committee
also stressed on the importance of encouraging
women participation in various sports such as football and also made notable
efforts to tackle the corruption problems prevalent in the game side by side.
After several moderated caucuses focused on creating new FIFA
council, the promotion of women’s
football, transparency and credibility of the committee, disclosure of the
salary and so on, the committee moved on to the working paper. In the first
half, there was an intense debate about the football games but the debate
gradually changed to a discussion about the executive members of FIFA. The
entire committee was in favour of banning the corrupt officials of FIFA. The
topic “influence of the government in the decisions of FIFA” created a stir in
the committee, which led to a clash of opinions for which a resolution is yet
to be drafted. Only time will say what reforms the delegates are going to make
in the FIFA committee.
On a parting note, we hope to see more hands raised (and more
frequently) because, delegates you only have 48 hours to bag those awards!!
