#MUNbujhneModerators - Sunaj, Irtika, Batshala

During MUNs, most of us fail to acknowledge and credit the Moderators, don’t we? Some may disagree, but the moderator really is an important member of the dais. The chair and vice-chair are indeed important, however the moderator has equal significance. Whenever the chair or vice-chair are enjoying a sweet cup of tea out of committee, the moderator remains diligent and assiduous – taking control of the committee and debate. Its usually only times like these when delegates notice their moderators.

“The committee will run either way if I am present or I am not.” States the moderator of Arab League. This clearly shows that the moderators have comparatively less influence over the committee than the chair and vice-chair. Just as one of the guests (NIrnaya Dangol) says, “there has always been a tradition for example there is a division that first comes the chair then the vice-chair and finally at the end, the moderator”  Through this statement he means that the disparity between the other dais members and the moderator is crystal clear. The feeling that the moderator is just like an assistant has been inculcated into the MUN environment and the minds of most delegates. Everyone needs to understand that the moderator does not just assist, but takes upon the responsibilities of the entire dais and plays a crucial role in leading the committee towards success.

The moderator may not take lead of the committee but whether you realize it or not, he/she serves as the backbone of the committee. It is the moderator who sets the context, drives the discussion and engages the delegates in an interactive debate. It is the moderator who sets the tone of the program --enabling all the participants to feel comfortable and involved. You may notice that the moderator is always accompanied by a notebook and a pen. That notebook and pen is so that they can note down the best speakers, politic diplomats and all the delegates in the running for an award. They might also seem quiet, but behind that silence is a large amount of hard work and dedication. The moderator always has an eye on all the delegates. The moderator is the one that judges you and marks you. The moderator is the one who understands you. So don’t go around underestimating your moderator!
